When I met Jessie on the benches outside the dining hall, they’re carrying an Instant Pot. This wasn’t my first time meeting Jessie. They are one of my coadvisor. I remember seeing them around campus last year and I learned that they’re first day was last January. Jessie told me that it was a cold and chaotic day. Snow was falling rapidly and coating the ground. They told me that they saw everyone having so much fun. I asked them about their high school experience and they told me that it was at a public high school with a big class size. They told me that one of the reasons they like CSW was because of the smaller class size. You get to know the students and they tell me they really like the dining hall food. They also told me that they were positively shocked seeing the agency students have and how students are able to follow their passion here. I learned that the reason Jessie wanted to become a teacher was to help people and be able to witness them make connections. I asked Jessie what classes they are excited to teach this year and they enthusiastically responded “All of them!” They tell me that they love that the whole math department shares a love of math and teaching. Lastly they share that they are always open to hearing a bad joke from any student.

I ask them a question that has been on my mind since they mentioned having this hobby during advisory: “What is Contra Dancing?” Jessie answers “A style of fold dancing mashup with swing line and square dancing”.

Jessie is a very talented and passionate person. I am very grateful that they have joined the CSW community and it was so much fun interviewing them!
